QUOTE OF THE WEEK

We have no government armed with the power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion.… Our Constitution was made only for a moral and a religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other

"All, too, will bear in mind this sacred principle, that though the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will, to be rightful, must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal rights, which equal laws must protect, and to violate which would be oppression."
-- Thomas Jefferson, First Inaugural Address, March 4, 1801

That would mean everyone...not just people that are deemed "moral and religious".

Even Athiests have rights.

Firstapparently your argument is with John Adams not me.

Second that is not what John Adams meant or what he said.. Why don't you try reading it again without the preconceptions this time.

You sound a little cranky today SOL...have you taken your meds?

NO! and the nurse will not be slipping them in my OJ behind my back anymore.

Did you figure out what John is saying yet.

Maybe you should read it again after the inaugaration. You know when you sober up.

LOL...good one SOL.

We need to curb our sinful ways if we want this government to work...or something close to that I think. But the way it was phrased makes me think he puts too much emphasis on a relgious people instead of people that just need to do the right thing. You don't have to be religious to do the right thing.

I'm sure at the time, it was fine to phrase it like that.

LOL

Actually what Mr Adams is saying is that a democratic government can not survive without religion to curb humanities worst instincts.

An interesting discussion point don't you think..

Yes...but then again, how would he react knowing that I'm drunk with giddiness over the next four years! I know he didn't like the debauchery of Mr. Franklin..especially in Paris!
